Commercial Carpet Cleaning: How Often Should It Be Done?

Here’s a fun (and gross) fact – Up to 24 pounds of dirt can be brought in by 1,000 people coming through an entrance in just a 20-day work period. Daily vacuuming will remove much of this dirt. But vacuuming can only pick up so much and does not pick up the dirt and dust that is embedded deep into your carpet’s fibers.

If your building’s carpets are looking worn and/or stained, it can have a negative impact on the impression you are making to your staff and customers. You would also be amazed at the odor that builds up overtime in your building from carpets that have been left uncleaned for too long. Having your office’s carpets cleaned on a regular schedule is an easy way to improve your brand image and is also a great investment that prolongs the life of the carpet (which is not cheap to replace).

How Often Should Your Carpets Be Cleaned?

There are many factors that determine what sort of schedule you should set for your commercial carpet cleaning. The two greatest factors into determine this schedule is the volume of traffic your building gets as well as the occurrence of stains.

Spot Cleaning

Cleaning up stains right away can help keep your carpets looking clean and fresh. If a stain is left too long, then it will be much more difficult to pull the stain out of the carpet’s fibers. Once a stain occurs at your building, notify your custodial staff to “spot clean” the stain using a special chemical or even better, a professional carpet spotting machine.

Vacuuming

To keep your building’s carpets looking great and to remove and built-up dirt and bacteria, you will want to have high-traffic areas vacuumed daily. This regular vacuuming will prolong the life of your carpet, keep the fibers looking fresh, and will save you money in the long run from having to replace the carpets as often as if you did not have them vacuumed daily.

Carpet Deep Cleaning

Professional carpet cleaning can successfully remove about 98 percent of dirt and bacteria from your building’s carpets. Professionally cleaning the carpets is also the best way of prolonging their lifespan and saving you money in the long run. But how often should you be scheduling this service?

High Traffic Areas

When it comes to very high traffic areas, you should have them professionally cleaned between 2x-4x per year. Buildings that usually apply to this rule are medical buildings, corporate office buildings, schools, and some apartment or condominium buildings.

Low to Medium Traffic Areas

If your carpet only sees medium, or low, traffic daily then you can probably get away with scheduling your professional carpet cleaning service 1x-2x per year. Or you could setup a “hybrid” plan where certain areas are professionally carpet cleaned at a higher frequency and others are cleaned at a lower frequency.

Regardless of your situation, it is best to consult with a professional janitorial company as they can determine the best cleaning and maintenance plan for the carpets in your building.
